Legislative Update - Supreme Court Decision

Monday, January 27, 2025

Dear Neighbors,

The Supreme Court ruled that Republicans’ attempted power grab in the Minnesota House violated the state Constitution. Essentially, every action they took over the last couple of weeks was unconstitutional. At the heart of my quorum denial is the Republicans’ stated desire to try to overturn an election of Brad Tabke, who voters in Shakopee elected, and whose election was certified and affirmed by a court. It would be an appalling and unprecedented abuse of power to throw out an election and disenfranchise the 22,000 Minnesotans who voted in Shakopee in November.

In addition, the voters elected a tied legislature at 67-67. Democrats have made reasonable offers for Republicans to run the Minnesota House while there is a temporary vacancy in district 40B (Roseville-Shoreview). We’re asking to govern under shared power if the House returns to a 67-67 tie after the special election in 40B.

I am still working hard for my constituents by drafting bills (including three resulting from constituent communications), meeting with constituents, connecting with local leaders and community groups, and more.

Intimate Partner Homicide Memorial

It was my honor to speak at the Intimate Partner Homicide Memorial, remembering those who were murdered last year. When we look at the faces of those murdered, we see that intimate partner violence impacts all communities, everywhere.

It knows no boundaries when it comes to geography, race, income level, gender, gender identity, or age. We see bystanders, including children, who were killed, heroes trying to intervene, and people who were just trying to live their lives.

Behind those faces, we see those left behind: the children and other family members, neighbors, friends, and co-workers. Intimate Partner Violence impacts first responders, advocates, health care providers, justice partners, and communities. It isn’t a problem for any one person to solve but is instead a problem for everyone.

You can find a memorial to Minnesota’s victims of intimate partner homicide here.

Learning about Local Priorities

I recently met with the Mayor of Shoreview. I enjoyed learning about some city priorities and am proud to call Shoreview my home. I look forward to supporting Shoreview’s needs this session.

Star Tribune Commentary

I, along with several of my colleagues, recently signed onto a powerful commentary about the need to keep Minnesota as a beacon of hope. During the last biennium, my DFL colleagues and I accomplished a lot of good, bringing our state closer to a place where all people have the freedom to live their best life. We moved to protect the rights of the most vulnerable and improve the economy for working and middle class families. We fought hard to get where we are, and we won’t back down now.

Decrease in Forensic Analysis Turnaround Time

Earlier this month the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension released a report showing a significant reduction in forensic evidence turnaround time, and more specifically, sexual assault examination kit tests. This is a direct result of action taken by the legislature that I led in a bipartisan manner. The BCA now has no pending kits over a 90 day limit set by the legislature and is able to process new kits in a timely manner. There is also now more support for victim survivors who want to track the processing of their kits.

Free Youth Heart Screening

There is a Free Heart Screening Event that will take place in New Brighton, for kids and young adults in our district. It will take place February 1st. at Highview Middle School in New Brighton.  Please share this with family, friends, coworkers, clients who have kids 14-24. You might just save a life!
