Legislative Update - Co-Governing Agreement

Friday, February 7, 2025

Dear Neighbors,

I'm excited to announce that House DFL and Republican leadership reached an agreement to co-govern over the next two years. This follows weeks of contentious negotiations where our primary sticking point was the Republicans' unwillingness to seat duly elected Rep. Brad Tabke. Thankfully the agreement calls for a fair process in the Legislature to consider election results.

The agreement says that Republicans will govern as a majority until we return to a 67-67 tie, which will happen if the Democrats win the March 11th special election in 40B (Roseville and Shoreview). At that point, all committees will have equal representation from both parties with co-chairs leading. While Republican Rep. Lisa Demuth was elected as Speaker for the full two years as part of the agreement. I was proud to give a speech in favor of Rep. Melissa Hortman whose leadership has been invaluable throughout the last several years.

Recent Work

During the negotiation period I was hard at work advancing our shared values in district. Here is some of what I worked on recently:

  • Connected with multiple constituents, including David, who shared the successes his son has had with the disability services their family receives. We cannot balance budgets on the backs of people who have disabilities.
  • Met with New Brighton City Council to hear their legislative priorities.
  • Joined my colleagues with Congresswoman Betty McCollum to discuss how we can work together to protect Minnesotans from federal funding cuts.
  • Worked a lot on my bills, including a constituent-led bill that will address some of the terrible things that happened to my neighbor’s mother in memory care. I appreciate her willingness to advocate for this bill so other families don’t have to experience the same barriers to care.

Recently I joined my colleagues in touring two shelters that assist the unhoused. We talked about the barriers faced by their clients - such as generational trauma, substance use disorder, and mental health issues - all of which highlight the public health issues surrounding those who lack housing.

Resisting Federal Overreach

I have heard from many of you about your concerns with the radical actions being taken by the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress. I want to assure you that I will use all of my power to resist every illegal, hateful, racist, xenophobic, and discriminatory action coming from the federal government. I will fight to protect the rights of all Minnesotans.
