Legislative Update- March 25, 2019

Monday, March 25, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

The House Majority released its budget ‘targets’ today, which will lay the foundation for our work crafting an equitable state budget. I am still reviewing the details, however, we cannot ignore federal budget uncertainties in the near future. It’s important for all of us, on both sides of the aisle, to be thoughtful and cautious in how we find a balanced and responsible approach for Minnesota.

Governor Walz Shares Revised Budget

Governor Tim Walz recently shared his revised budget plan for Minnesota. His proposal is based on the February state economic forecast, which revealed a significant reduction in the state's expected budget surplus. Budget experts in Minnesota say the balance declined by a third from the previous forecast, which was released in early December. You can read more about it here.

National Public Schools Week

As we recognize Public Schools Week, I’d like to thank all of our teachers and support staff at our public schools in Minnesota that work so hard to help our students achieve success inside and outside of the classroom. The best way we can show our gratitude is to provide them with the necessary tools to cut down on class sizes, create innovative programming and ensure our students have access to the mental health resources they need.
I was grateful for the opportunity recently to meet with a group of school counselors at the Capitol, who shared their joys and challenges in the profession. Our state is the 4th worst in the country in school counselor to student ratios; on average in Minnesota it’s 723 students to one school counselor. This is unacceptable, which is why I’ve sponsored legislation that would deliver grant funding to school districts to hire additional school support services personnel including licensed school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, school nurses, and chemical dependency counselors.

Keep in Touch

Please keep the emails, letters and phone calls coming. I’ve appreciated all of your feedback and input. I’d love to hear about your values and what’s important to you and your family.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
John
