Release: Huot legislation to increase EMT recruitment receives hearing in House Education Finance Committee

Thursday, February 2, 2023

ST. PAUL, MN - Today, the House Education Finance Committee discussed legislation authored by Rep. John Huot (DFL-Rosemount) to increase EMT recruitment across the state.

“The ongoing pandemic and extreme weather events in our state have presented many challenges for Minnesotans and the EMS community, who are already stretched thin,” said Rep. Huot (DFL-Rosemount), a former paramedic who spearheaded statewide efforts in the House in 2019 to improve recruitment and retention of EMS volunteers. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and the public to ensure prospective first responders are supported, and Minnesotans are getting the reliable emergency medical services they need.”

This bill appropriates grant funding to school districts, charter schools, or cooperatives to offer high school students emergency medical services courses that prepare students to take the emergency medical technician certification test. Grant funds may be used to pay for teacher salaries, transportation, equipment costs, emergency medical technician certification test fees, and student background checks.

Rep. Huot encourages constituents to contact him with any questions, comments, or ideas on any legislative topic. He can be reached by phone at 651-296-4306 or by email at rep.john.huot@house.mn.gov. Sign up for his electronic legislative updates at www.house.mn/56b/.
