Minnesota House approves Rep. Jay Xiong’s proposal to clean up Pig’s Eye dump
St. Paul, Minn. – Today, the Minnesota House passed legislation to invest more than $275 million in preserving our environment and natural resources for current and future generations of Minnesotans.
The legislation includes Rep. Jay Xiong’s proposal to remediate and restore the Pig's Eye Landfill Superfund site and address perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination of Battle Creek, Pig's Eye Lake, and nearby groundwater.
State Representative Jay Xiong (DFL - Saint Paul) released the following statement regarding the passage of the bill:
“This area has the misfortune of being one of the oldest dump sites in our state's history. From the Mississippi River at Fort Snelling to Wakan Tipi and Pig's Eye, this area has been crucial to our history and sacred to the civilizations which have come before us. We must begin to clean up this place and improve it for both the environment's sake as well as for the sake of our human health. This is about equity.”
Video of the floor session will be available on House Public Information Services’ YouTube channel.
