St. Paul, MN—House Republican Public Safety Lead Rep. Paul Novotny, R-Elk River, issued the following statement regarding House Democrats' decision to bury two controversial gun control bills inside their 312-page public safety omnibus bill.
“It is incredibly disappointing that Democrats are burying these controversial gun control bills deep inside a 312-page omnibus package,” said Novotny. “If Democrats want to pass legislation that strips away the constitutional rights of law-abiding Minnesotans, then they should have the courage to debate these issues on their own merits as standalone bills. Instead of targeting lawful gun owners, I call on Democrats to join us in focusing our efforts on solutions that address root causes impacting gun violence like improving access to mental health care, holding repeat violent offenders accountable, and providing resources to law enforcement and the courts to prosecute criminals.”
Language from House Files 14 and 15 are included in the public safety omnibus bill. House File 14 creates undue burdens, preventing law-abiding citizens from freely exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. House File 15 raises several concerns regarding the suspension of someone’s constitutional rights without due process.
