Capitol Newsletter from Rep. Danny Nadeau

Thursday, June 1, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

The 2023 legislative session ended last week. Many Minnesotans were rightfully expecting to see the legislature approve meaningful tax relief this year to help mitigate inflation that is having a serious impact on family budgets. I am disappointed to share with you that the tax relief you and your family deserve will not be coming this year.

Instead, the new two-year state budget will increase spending from $52 billion to $72 billion and raise taxes by nearly $10 billion. The tax hikes include raising the state’s gas tax and tying it to inflation, increasing vehicle license tab fees, a new delivery tax, a new payroll tax that will hit employers and employees alike, and more.

It is disappointing that despite our best efforts to work with the majorities in the House and Senate, we were not able to provide more relief for families.

Despite these disappointments and the overall lack of collaboration despite our best efforts, we were still able to deliver emergency funding to save nursing homes, support our veterans, build and maintain public infrastructure, and more. These successes were proof that we can accomplish great things for Minnesotans when we work together. It is a shame that we did not see more of this.

Both legislative bodies approved a capital investment package to fund infrastructure projects around the, just hours before the 2023 session adjourned. I am grateful to have secured funding for several local projects including:

  • $1 million for site and infrastructure improvements at Mississippi Crossings in Champlin.
  • $1.25 million for property acquisition along the Elm Creek Greenway Trail Corridor in Champlin.
  • $1.75 million for water treatment facility improvements in Dayton.

As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to assist in the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure projects that serve the common good. This includes making sure that Minnesotans can have access to clean water, safe roads and bridges, and an overall improved quality of life. These three local projects for the communities of Champlin and Dayton fulfill that responsibility.
