Legislative Update

With just a few weeks left in session, we’ve been hard at work negotiating bills out of committee. There’ve been some long days and late nights as committees and members work through the details of the major omnibus bills. With the House evenly split, every bill needs bipartisan support, which means more voices at the table and more back and forth over what makes it in and what doesn’t. That’s a good thing, but it also makes for some tense debates. One of the more contentious issues is the DFL’s expansion of Minnesota Care to included undocumented immigrants, which I’ll cover below.

MinnesotaCare Expansion Raises Serious Fiscal Concerns

One of the most troubling pieces in the Health bill is the continued push to expand MinnesotaCare to undocumented individuals. This proposal comes with a hefty price tag (over $550 million) at a time when our state’s budget has gone from an $18 billion surplus to a projected $6 billion deficit. That kind of spending should give everyone pause. We all want a strong safety net, but we also have a responsibility to ensure programs are balanced, sustainable and serve Minnesotans wisely. This expansion not only places additional strain on our already stretched budget, but it also creates added uncertainty as we look ahead to potential reductions in federal funding. Now is the time for caution and accountability, not extreme ideologies.

Charting a Path Forward: Setting Priorities in the State Budget

As we continue to work through this session’s budget bills, it’s important to take a clear-eyed look at the decisions made over the past two years. The health budget has grown by nearly 70 percent, part of why  we’re now facing a $6 billion deficit. That’s a serious challenge, but also an opportunity to refocus our efforts on sustainability and accountability. It won’t be solved with intransigence.

There are big-ticket programs on the table, including the $550 million expansion of MinnesotaCare to undocumented individuals and the $179 million set aside for high-cost weight-loss drugs. It is fair to ask whether these are the right priorities for our state at this time. We should be open to revisiting past spending decisions and making adjustments where needed.

The good news is that with a tied House, bipartisan cooperation is not optional, it is required. That opens the door for meaningful conversations and common-sense compromise. My goal remains to deliver smart, responsible solutions that meet Minnesotans’ needs while protecting long-term fiscal stability. It is not about pointing fingers or obsessing about what happened last session, or what the federal government may do. It is about working together, looking forward and focusing on delivering the ‘nuts and bolts’ of government services.

Looking ahead, next week we will begin hearing the Human Services Budget and Policy, Environment, and Taxes omnibus bills. I will continue to approach each with a strong commitment to thoughtful oversight, fiscal responsibility, and policies that put Minnesotans first.

Let's Continue Working Together
