Legislative Update

Hello, Friends and Neighbors!

I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the almost spring weather—Minnesota sure likes to keep us on our toes! Things have been moving fast at the Capitol, and let’s just say, there’s never a dull moment. Between heated debates, important bills moving forward, and the occasional shamrock shake break (thanks to some generous folks on Hospitality Day!), there’s plenty to update you on.

So grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s dive into what’s been happening under the dome!

Progress Update: HF448 Receives First Hearing

1

I'm pleased to share that House File 448, a bill I authored to secure funding for critical water treatment plant improvements in Lafayette, had its first hearing on Thursday before the House Capital Investment Committee.

This bill seeks to allocate $1.893 million in state bonding funds to help the City of Lafayette upgrade its existing water treatment plant by installing a reverse osmosis system. These improvements are essential to reducing high chloride levels in the city’s wastewater and preventing further violations related to drinking water disinfection byproducts. Without these upgrades, the city could face costly penalties, and more importantly, its residents could experience ongoing concerns about the quality of their drinking water.

Water infrastructure is one of those things we often take for granted—until there’s a problem. Clean, safe drinking water isn’t a luxury; it’s a basic necessity. Small communities like Lafayette shouldn’t have to bear the financial burden of these large-scale improvements alone. This bill ensures that the state steps in to help maintain public health and protect the environment.

I appreciate the committee taking the time to hear this bill, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to move HF448 forward. I’ll keep you updated on its progress!

Great Guests at the Capitol This Week!

1

I had a great visit with Heather and James from The Food Group, and I’m excited about the opportunity to work together on expanding the Backpack Program! This initiative helps ensure kids have access to nutritious meals over the weekend, so no child goes hungry when school isn’t in session. I’m especially looking forward to bringing this program to Nicollet Public School and making a real difference for our students and families. Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward with this important partnership!

I had the pleasure of meeting with the President of Gustavus-Adolphus College to discuss the incredible work happening on campus and ways to strengthen the connection between higher education and our community. Gustavus has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence and leadership development, and I’m excited about future opportunities to collaborate. Education is key to shaping the next generation, and I look forward to supporting institutions like Gustavus in their mission to empower students!

Connecting with Advocates: Homeless Day on the Hill

1

This week, we had the opportunity to meet with passionate advocates during Homeless Day on the Hill. These conversations were not just eye-opening—they were a reminder of the urgent need to address housing insecurity and ensure that every Minnesotan has access to safe, stable shelter.

We heard directly from individuals who have experienced homelessness, service providers on the front lines, and policy experts working toward real solutions. Their insights reinforce the importance of targeted resources, accountability in funding, and policies that prioritize both immediate relief and long-term stability.

We are committed to working on meaningful legislation that addresses these concerns and ensures that state resources go where they are needed most. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their stories and advocate for change. Your voices are making a difference!
