Friends,
This week, House Republicans unveiled our budget framework as we continue moving forward with negotiations. I also presented several bills before the House Committee on Public Safety and had the honor of celebrating the life of Patrick William Smith Jr., a man whose legacy has already made a significant impact and will continue to inspire our community for years to come.
As we dive further into our discussions with the Democrats, I wanted to offer you a quick glimpse into what we are working towards in these negotiations. Below is a brief overview of our budget framework.
Our budget framework is about getting Minnesota back on track and ensuring that your tax dollars are spent wisely. We're prioritizing long-term fiscal health for the state while protecting the interests of you and your family.
On Wednesday this week, I had the opportunity to discuss my bill HF 0538. This is simple legislation that will make our communities safer and allow law enforcement officers to protect themselves and the public while in the line of duty.
Minnesotans want to live in safe communities, and they want a police force that can do their job effectively. This is part of how we get there.
You can see me speak about this bill during committee here.
It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of former Le Sueur County Sheriff, Patrick William Smith Jr., on March 28, 2025, at the age of 89. A dedicated public servant, Patrick served as Sheriff for 20 years, after first being appointed Chief Deputy Sheriff in 1956. His 42 years of service to the Le Sueur County community exemplify his commitment to keeping our neighborhoods safe and supporting our youth.
Patrick's legacy extends far beyond his law enforcement career. He was a beloved member of the Le Center community, with a passion for hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. His involvement in numerous organizations, including the Le Sueur County Sheriff's Youth Project, will continue to inspire us all.
As we remember Sheriff Smith, I am reminded of the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:9:
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."
Patrick’s life was a testament to this calling, and his peaceful spirit and unwavering dedication to justice have left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Patrick's contributions to our county will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Sheriff Smith.
Memorials in his honor can be made to the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Youth Project.
