Legislative Update - A Tied Minnesota House

Hello Friends!

Following last week’s special election in Roseville and the election of DFLer David Gottfried, the Minnesota House is finally at full membership and back to a tie.

On Monday, Rep. Gottfried was sworn-in, and the 67-67 tie triggered the remainder of the power-sharing agreement my DFL colleagues and I fought to secure last month.

At the start of the legislative session, Republicans didn’t just want to kick me out, they wanted their temporary advantage to be permanent, regardless of the outcome in Roseville. Our power-sharing agreement ensures that the governance of the House will reflect its tied membership.

Thanks to our power-sharing agreement:

  • House committees have even GOP and DFL membership
  • House committees alternate GOP and DFL co-chairs
  • Bipartisan support is needed for any bill to pass committees, not just the House Floor

It’s my hope that returning to a tie, and the dismissal of baseless recall efforts, can finally allow us to turn the page on the contentious 2024 election. We need to come together to make Minnesota better, and partisan political games are only going to set us back.

I know we can do it - plenty of bipartisan work is already starting to shine through - it just needs to be the norm.

If you have any questions about our work or the consequences of a tied House, feel free to reach out!
