St. Paul, MN – On Monday, House Democrats refused to take a vote on refilling the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Trust fund and saving Minnesota businesses from years of massive tax hikes — some ranging from 30% or higher.
Despite efforts from House Republicans working with everyone to find a solution, House Democrats still refused to bring the UI Trust Fund legislation to the House floor for a vote. The legislation had support from Governor Walz, House Republicans along with Senate Republicans and Democrats.
“Business owners and consumers ultimately lose,” Representative Matt Grossell (R-Clearbrook) said. “The House Democrat Majority had a chance to fulfill a promise to not punish MN businesses who were forced to close during the Walz shutdown, but they've failed Minnesota businesses by their inaction.”
The UI Trust Fund legislation that would refill the state’s $2.7 billion deficit has not moved in committee since February. House Democrats refused to hear the bill and it was not signed into law by the March 15 deadline.
Even the Commissioner of the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) encouraged House members to pass the legislation, citing that without it, a tax hike would burden business owners for the next six years.
