Minnesota House Approves E-12 Education Budget

Budget would increase funding by approximately $1,000 per student in Minneapolis Public Schools

St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota House passed the E-12 education budget late last night, which increases per-pupil funding for students across the state by 3% in the first year and by another 2% in the second year of the biennium. The Minneapolis School District would receive approximately $1,051 in additional funding per student.

The budget is inspired by parents, students, teachers, staff, and administrators who told legislators how growing class sizes and budget cuts have impacted the quality of instruction, support, and education in schools.

"This budget improves the lives and the opportunities afforded to our kids, to our neighbors kids, and to students around the state that are struggling to get a good education," said Rep. Hodan Hassan (DFL - Minneapolis). "Minnesota suffers from one of the largest achievement gaps in the country. With the mental health support and community resources provided in this bill, we can work to change that statistic."

Rep. Hassan is a co-sponsor of a provision on the omnibus bill to provide school-linked mental health grants.

After the Minnesota Senate approves their E-12 education budget, members from each chamber will form a conference committee to craft a final budget.
