Legislation to promote homeownership in disadvantaged communities receives committee hearing
Saint Paul, Minn. – Today, the Housing Finance and Policy Committee heard legislation to establish a homeownership investment grant program through the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency. The investment would help provide services to increase access to owner-occupied housing in low-income communities, Indigenous American Indian communities, and communities of color.
The bill is authored by Rep. Hodan Hassan (DFL – Minneapolis).
“Homeownership is the most important asset when it comes to building generational wealth, and practices such as redlining, restrictive covenants, and steering have created decades upon decades of blockades so that people of color cannot own their homes,” said Rep. Hassan. “Especially now that we’re in the midst of a housing crisis, passing this bill has never been more vital. It’s impossible to undo centuries of housing discrimination overnight, but passing this bill will contribute a vital piece to the puzzle and put us on the right track to uplifting low-income communities, Indigenous American Indian communities, and communities of color for generations to come.”
The bill has been laid over for possible consideration in a larger Housing Finance and Policy Committee bill.
