SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, the Minnesota House passed HF 5, the Universal School Meals bill, to provide school breakfast and lunch to all Minnesota students at no cost, regardless of their family income. Rep. Jess Hanson (DFL - Burnsville) co-authored and voted for the legislation. The bill passed on a vote of 70-58.
“I’m proud to support this legislation to ensure all students regardless of background have access to free breakfast and lunch at school beginning this fall,” said Rep. Hanson. “Minnesota families are spending thousands of dollars on groceries every year, and a lot of that money goes toward packing school lunches. This bill will slash grocery costs and help families save money.”
The bill has garnered support from parents, teachers, food service workers, school board members, and organizations fighting hunger, The Senate’s companion bill is being passed through its committees.
