Rep. Nathan Coulter Responds to MMB Budget Forecast

Saint Paul, Minn – Today, Minnesota Management and Budget released its February budget forecast. This forecast shows the budget outlook moving in the wrong direction compared to the forecast released last November. Donald Trump’s reckless economic policies are impacting this forecast, with inflation expected to climb and tax receipts expected to fall. Tax cuts for the obscenely wealthy and corporations and cuts to Medicaid are expected to bring additional negative impacts.

Representative Nathan Coulter (DFL – Bloomington) released the following statement:

“The November budget forecast showed a $3.7 billion surplus in the current biennium, a $616 million positive balance in the upcoming budget cycle, and our highest budget reserve fund ever – another $3.5 billion. Minnesota’s economy and budget are moving in the wrong direction because of the chaos and catastrophe that Donald Trump and Republicans are bringing.

“Whether it’s illegally freezing federal funding, firing public servants, or imposing tariffs on our biggest trade partners, the Trump administration is putting Minnesota on a path to fiscal disaster because they'd rather help corporations and billionaires rig the economy to benefit themselves.

“Minnesotans are rightly worried about their future, and as leaders, our job should be to focus on making things better. As we begin crafting our next state budget in earnest, I'm eager to work with anyone who agrees.”

Instead of bringing down prices like they promised on the campaign trail, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are on the verge of enacting a sweeping tax cut for corporations and the ultra-wealthy, and they’re going to pay for it by slashing federal spending on health care for children, families, seniors, and people with disabilities. This will have dire consequences for the people of Minnesota and our state budget.
