Capitol Newsletter from Rep. Mike Wiener

Friday, February 23, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

Before we get into this week’s newsletter, I want to take a moment to honor and remember the three first responders who were tragically killed last Sunday in Burnsville. My prayers are with their families, with the community of Burnsville, and with the brave men and women who have taken an oath to protect and serve us.

2024 Legislative Session Begins

The 2024 legislative session is officially underway, and it is good to be back in St. Paul fighting on behalf of you, your family, and our communities.

Minnesotans have seen and felt the consequences of one-party control with soaring inflation rates, billions of dollars in new taxes, and dozens of controversial policies that have divided Minnesota. It is more clear than ever that balance is needed in St. Paul.

That’s why I am committed to bringing commonsense back to the legislature and to fighting against the reckless and irresponsible policies of House and Senate Democrats who continue to make Minnesota unaffordable for working-class families.

Representing the Will of the People

This week, many of our local county commissioners and sheriffs visited St. Paul to chat about issues impacting counties back home.

We are lucky to have local elected officials serving our communities who are willing to stand up, make their voices heard, and reflect the will of the people they represent. Many counties in our area have recently approved formal resolutions opposing Democrat efforts to change the state flag and others are considering resolutions opposing the proposed sanctuary state bill.

I share their concerns and am committed to continuing to push back against efforts to turn Minnesota into a magnet for illegal immigration, to change our state flag and other efforts that would effectively ban firearms in Minnesota.

These proposals do not reflect the values and priorities of our communities and would further push Minnesota down a dangerous path that minimizes personal liberty and freedom and maximizes the size of government.

Stay tuned to these important issues as I will be keeping you updated on them and many others as the legislative session unfolds—and remember, no bill is officially “dead” until the legislature adjourns for the year. Therefore, it is on all of us to remain vigilant and to continue pushing back on these reckless proposals.
