Legislative Update

Dear neighbors,

This week I introduced House File 812 in the Taxes Committee. This bill is designed to provide tax relief for the hardest-working people in Minnesota cutting Minnesota’s lowest income tax bracket.

Minnesota has one of the highest state income tax rates in the country, with particularly high rates at the lowest income bracket. Our neighbors (Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and North Dakota) all have significantly lower tax burdens, making Minnesota less competitive and placing a strain on our working families. With an $18 billion surplus, there was a clear opportunity to deliver on the promises of affordability, property tax relief, and meaningful tax cuts. Unfortunately, those promises never happened and instead, we’ve seen more unfunded mandates that continue to burden our communities.

My bill proposes a cut to the lowest tax bracket, offering immediate relief to those who need it most. For someone making under $38,000 a year, this could mean an increase of 50 cents to $1 per hour in take-home pay. That’s real, transformative relief for thousands of Minnesotans trying to make ends meet.
