St. Paul, MN— Representative Matt Grossell (R-Clearbrook) has filed legislation to require the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission to report information on certain sentences when the mandatory minimum was not imposed.
“Criminal information is public information. If the minimum sentence is not imposed, the public should have access to court records, to know why the court made the decision to depart from the guidelines,” Grossell said.
As part of the bill, the offender’s name, case facts, applicable minimum sentence and imposed sentence must be reported.
The legislation is currently in the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Finance and Policy Committee for review. More information on the bill is available here.
